Many people stop in their tracks and give a weird face when you say or see the words “Double Doodle….” and we can understand why because in Australia this could mean a number of different things, which I will leave you to ponder…..!

Due to the massive hysteria that surrounded COVID19 it wasn’t just the toilet paper that people went nuts for, another thing was pets. Dogs and puppies, especially those that were Poodle crosses having inherited the Poodle hypoallergenic Low to Non-shed coats perfect to have inside the house and the fact that they are super cute, soft and cuddly like living teddy bears, This all helped our mental health during Covid lockdowns. Poodle crosses are in demand Labradoodles, Groodles, Cavoodles, Spoodles, Moodle, Bernadoodles, Borderdoodles, you name it if it is an Oodle of any description it is snapped up without hesitation. People now acknowledge the positive breeding attributes that a Poodle brings to the mix with a Purebred Dog and it has become fashionable to have an Oodle in the family !

So what exactly is a Double Doodle…?

A Double Doodle is quite simply a cross mating between two Oodles and that could be any number of 50+ Oodle combinations that are now common in the world. So there is no set box of traits, size and height of what to expect with a Double Doodle so really this is something each individual breeder will have to guide you on.

Double Doodles at Kooroora Bay Groodles

Traditionally at Kooroora Bay Groodles we breed Standard size Groodles and Poodles, however we do also have 2 Labradoodles in our pack that were Co-Breed by us with another reputable breeder. The first is Kylo-Ren a Black hair/fleece coat girl and the second and most recent is Moana a Dark Red Fleece coat girl. So many people were asking the differences between Groodles and Labradoodles and yes, their temperaments and traits are different to a point, so why not combine the 2 and produce Double Doodles that way we could stand out from the crowd yet still be loyal to our breeding programme. So we started breeding Standard Groodle x Standard Labradoodle = Standard Double Doodle and this gives us a more consistent Standard Double Doodle Pups.

Double Doodle vs Groodle

What we have found about our Standard Double Doodles is :

They tend to take on more the Labradoodle side on DNA traits tending to be:
taller and heavier than Groodles;
maturing to weights of 25-35kg 60-65cm for girls
and weights of 30-40kg and 65-70cm for boys
They tend to be more water obsessed - literally to a point where they cant have a drink without their feet being in the bowl. This is great if you love water sports, boating, going to the beach, river or lake and will be taking your dog with you, but something to be aware of especially in Summer when you are leaving them at home. This is when you need to have bigger planter pot like water bowls around so they cannot swim the water out and leave themselves without water especially on hot days.
They tend to have higher energy levels than Groodles so they suit active families with older more active kids or active couples where there is something going on everyday for them to have fun and a good run.
They tend to be highly food driven and therefore making them easier to train
Their coats tend to grow slower than Groodles meaning groomer/clipper appointments can be longer between visits ultimately saving money
They tend to have either a low-shed fleece coat OR non-shed wool coat both being soft and hypoallergenic OR you can even get a soft hair coat that is still shedding but reduced compared to that of a Golden Retriever or Labrador
Just like Groodles they tend to be Low- Non Shed Hypoallergenic coats so perfect to be inside the house and dogs you take with you wherever you can.
Just like Groodles they love their humans and cuddle couch time and prefer to be with their family or favourite humans most of the time enjoying all activities, whether it be laying on the couch cuddling watching TV or going to the beach or park for a run.
Just like Groodles they tend to make great companion and therapy dogs due to their intelligence, loving gentle nature & hypoallergenic coats.
Just like Groodles their stunning good looks with soft coats and teddy bear appearance will get you stopped in the street many times with people asking to pat them and wanting to know more about them. They tend to be show stoppers which is great for meeting people and starting conversations when out and about.
Just like Groodles their reputation as soft natured house dogs allows many to be accepted into rental properties, holiday homes and vacation sites.
Just like Groodles once you have one, people tend to want another and regularly will never adopt any another breed as they just capture your heart .

Ultimately Double Doodles are an highly desirable dog to become part of your family pack and one that will get you noticed with their stunning good looks and teddy bear appearance. They have all the BEST traits of a Poodle and in our case also the great family attributes that a Golden Retriever and Labrador bring to the mix, making them awesome family and therapy dogs that will make you fall in love with them in a heartbeat and giving them the double thumbs up as a pet of choice for families. 👍👍
