Coat Types of Groodles and Double Doodles
/Different coat types of a Groodle and Double Doodle
There are 3 main coat types for Groodles (Golden Retriever x Poodle) & Double Doodles (Groodle x Labradoodle), they are - Wool, Fleece & Hair. You can also get a combination of wool/fleece referred to as a “Combination Coat” or fleece/hair that is referred to as “Smooth Coat” and generally these will all be less shedding to their purebred heritage of the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever. Being a crossbreed both Groodles (Golden Doodle) and our Double Doodles , can produce pups with any number of different coat types in the same litter.
Having The Purebred Standard Poodle in the mix is what makes all the difference.
So what is the difference in a Groodles & Double Doodles coat type…?
Wool Coat
Wool Coats are NON shed and have a soft curly look and texture like that of a pair of Wool UGG boot and can be similar to a sheep when grown long. The curls are tight and the hair NON shed which grows so they are often said to be Hypoallergenic. Regular brushing is required at least 1-2 times per week to keep the coat debris and matt free. This needs to be increased as the coat grows with regular clipper cutting every 6-8weeks with washing using additional conditioner every 4 weeks.
Combination Coat
Combination Coats are NON shed to Low shed and have a soft loose big curl. The hair still grows but does have an undercoat that sheds so they are often said to be LOW Allergenic. Regular brushing is required at least 1-2 times per week to keep the coat debris and matt free. This needs to be increased as the coat grows with regular clipper cutting every 6-8weeks with washing using additional conditioner every 4 weeks.
Fleece Coat
Fleece Coats are Low shed and have a soft relaxed wavy look. The hair still grows but does have an undercoat that sheds so they are often said to be LOW Allergenic. Regular brushing is required at least 2-4 times per week to keep the coat debris and matt free. This needs to be increased as the coat grows, sheds more with season changes or if housed inside to reduce hair drop in the home, with regular clipper cutting every 8-10weeks with washing using additional conditioner every 4 weeks.
Smooth Coat
Smooth Coats are Low shed to shedding and the coat has a dense under coat with a slightly courser texture than a fleece or wool coats with a soft Fluffy look. The hair still grows spiraticly on the body with short shedding hair on face and bottom of legs. Regular brushing is required weekly which needs to be increased as the coat grows, sheds more with season changes or if housed inside to reduce hair drop in the home and to keep the coat debris and matt free. A Clipper trim to even the coat out is required 1-2 time a year with washing every 2-4 weeks to reduce the typical dog smell .
Hair Coat
Hair Coats shed, be it much less than their Purebred Heritage of Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever. The coat has a dense under coat which is more course than a fleece or wool coats but softer than a normal hair dog. Regular brushing is required weekly which needs to be increased when it sheds more with season changes or if housed inside to reduce hair drop in the home and to keep the coat debris and matt free. A tidy trim to even the coat out is required once a year with washing every 2-4 weeks to reduce the typical dog smell .
